Debt
Questions to ask before you consolidate
When one payment helps, and when it only spreads the same debt thinner.
Will it cost less overall? Add up what you'd pay on your current debts if you carried on as you are, and set that against the total repayable on the new loan, fees included. A lower monthly payment can come from a longer term rather than a better rate, and then the total may rise.
Will the old balances stay paid off? Clearing a card with a loan doesn't close the card. If the balances build up again, you have the new loan to pay as well as the old debts.
